Millboard decking in Amersham – first-floor terrace by Karl Harrison

This elegant first-floor decking terrace in Amersham, built directly above the garage, shows exactly what happens when good design, the right materials and professional installation all work together. Designed and constructed by Karl Harrison Landscapes, it transforms an unused flat roof into a bright, inviting outdoor room.

Design and professional installation

The brief was simple: create a generous, low-maintenance terrace that feels like a natural extension of the home. Karl began with the structure – ensuring the existing garage roof could support the new deck and that drainage, falls and thresholds all worked correctly.

From there, the layout was kept clean and open, allowing for dining, relaxing and entertaining. Every board line, edge and junction has been set out with care, so the deck feels calm, ordered and easy to furnish.

All works were carried out by Karl’s in-house professional team, experienced with Millboard and with the detailing required for first floor and balcony-style projects.

Millboard – why it’s the go-to choice

For this terrace, Karl specified Millboard Enhanced Grain decking. It delivers the warmth and character of real timber with the practicality modern life demands:

  • Ultra-low maintenance – no regular sanding, staining or sealing
  • Highly slip-resistant surface
  • Won’t rot, warp or splinter like traditional softwood
  • Beautiful grain and subtle colour variation, even up close

On a first-floor terrace above a garage, reliability matters. Millboard is an ideal choice where long-term performance and appearance are just as important as the initial impact.

Balustrade – custom made and beautifully finished

Safety is non-negotiable on a raised deck, but that doesn’t mean the balustrade has to feel heavy. Here, Karl designed a custom timber balustrade, built in treated timber and finished with Owatrol Solid Colour Stain in a crisp white.

The result is a classic feel that frames the terrace without blocking the views. The vertical rhythm of the spindles gives the space structure and elegance, and the durable coating system keeps everything looking fresh and bright.

Steps with defined black edging

At the front of the property, a wide flight of steps leads visitors up to the front door. These are also finished in Millboard Enhanced Grain, but with a clever twist:

A contrasting dark edging board defines each tread. This simple detail:

  • Emphasises the line of every step
  • Improves visual safety, especially in low light
  • Ties the entrance design back to the terrace for a coherent look

It’s a small feature that makes a big difference to both style and usability.
