Decking at the Tower of London

Decking at the Tower of London

“Building a deck terrace for Her Majesty has to be one of the most prestigious proposals ever”… said Karl Harrison.

Nothing had prepared Karl for this one. Karl has designed and built some of the most expensive, complex and luxury decks there are… The Savoy, The Corinthia and countless London penthouse apartment rooftops.

Mark Gregory interviewed Karl in the East Moat, Karl said “it was nothing short of a privilege and that there was no better locale on earth to build a deck”.

Designing a curved structure in London

A complex design with curves at the heart of the design. Karl was approached by Landform Consultants to design the decking structure for the project. The project had to be designed to current industry standards promulgated by the Association of Professional Landscapers.

Site Engineer sets out the decking position

Once the Structural Engineer had signed the 4kN structural design by Karl, the could commence. 54 post supports were positioned from the drawing with absolute accuracy. Every post position had to be hand dug, they then cast the pad stones to provide the secure footings. Karl loves working to the highest of standards in decking design, BS5268-7.1 refers.

Decking in Moat at Super Bloom

The materials were supplied by Country Supplies. Awkward delivery times were kept to schedule by them which aided the efficient flow of works on site. They supplied the anti-slip timber decking, Use Class 3 (UC3) treated decking. The pine deck with anti-slip strips to prevent slips, trips and falls.

The decking upstand to fit the radii was in sawn timber and painted with RAL 7016 Solid Colour Stain by Owatrol.

The detail in the decking

“A complex and technically challenging project… one I am immensely proud of” said Karl.

Mark Gregory wrote “Superb design and build of this boardwalk deck, over the proposed seeding, its going to be spectacular! Think sun, think flowers, think London in the summer (thumbs up) think Superbloom.”

Do book a visit, It looks its best any time after March up until the end of Summer.
